Live translation has been the Pixel Buds’ signature trick since the first generation shipped in 2017 — and owners have argued about whether it earned the hype for nearly as long. This guide covers all three ways to run it today: the classic two-way conversation mode, the one-way transcribe mode owners genuinely praise, and the Gemini-powered Live translate Google shipped in December 2025 — which, in a twist, works with any headphones and quietly ended the Pixel Buds’ exclusive claim to the feature.

One honest note up front: we found no verified owner reports of the new Gemini version in the Reddit archives we query — everything about it here traces to Google and the tech press, not to users who have lived with it.
Method 1: two-way Conversation mode
This is the mode Google’s marketing leads with — two people, two languages, translation flowing both ways.
- Start it by voice or by app. Press and hold an earbud and say “Hey Google, help me speak Spanish” — the voice command documented by SlashGear and Android Authority. Or take Google’s official path: open the Translate app, tap Live Translate, then Conversation, then Start.
- Touch and hold the earbud while you talk. Your translated words play from the phone’s speaker, per SlashGear’s walkthrough.
- Hand the phone over, not the buds. Your conversation partner taps the mic button in the Translate app to reply, and their translated reply plays into your earbuds.
- Or let it switch automatically. Tapping the center mic button enables automatic mode, where Translate detects which language each person is speaking — described by both SlashGear and Android Authority.
Google’s own support page sets expectations plainly: translation is not instantaneous, and it recommends a quiet environment with one person speaking at a time. Hold that thought for the owner-reports section below.
Method 2: Transcribe mode — the one owners actually like
Transcribe mode is one-way: someone else speaks, and you hear the translation privately.
- Press and hold an earbud and say “Hey Google, help me understand Italian” — or open the Translate app, tap the mic, and choose Transcribe.
- Point the phone’s microphone at the speaker, lecture, or TV.
- Listen through the buds.
The catch, straight from Google’s support doc: Transcribe translates only from English into French, German, Italian, or Spanish. That is four target languages, versus the 33 Google currently lists for conversation mode. If your goal is understanding a non-English speaker, this mode cannot do it — use conversation mode or the new Gemini flow instead.
Within its narrow lane, this is where the praise lives: an archived r/GooglePixel owner called live translate through Pixel Buds phenomenal for lectures (October 2022), and a 160-upvote Pixel Buds Pro owner review (September 2022) singled out the Assistant and translate integration as a highlight.
Method 3: the December 2025 Gemini Live translate
On December 12, 2025, Google rolled out live translation in the Translate app powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio — covered the same day by 9to5Google and TechCrunch. The new flow, per that coverage and Google’s Translate help doc:
- Open the Google Translate app and tap Live translate. Pick a language or let it auto-detect.
- Choose how you want the output. Google’s doc lists four modes: Listening (headphones in, or phone held to your ear), Conversation (turn-taking, with the mic auto-detecting when one language stops and the other starts), Text only, and custom settings.
- Use any headphones. SoundGuys framed this explicitly as the end of Pixel Buds exclusivity — any Bluetooth or wired headphones with a mic now work.
Google says the new mode covers 70+ languages and, in its words, “keeps each speaker’s tone, emphasis, and cadence intact” — a first-party claim no independent test in our research has verified yet. Availability started as an Android beta in the US, Mexico, and India; Google’s March 26, 2026 announcement added iOS and expanded the list to 12 named countries, and on June 9, 2026 Google announced a global rollout with its Gemini 3.5 Live Translate upgrade. How many languages? Depends which Google page you read
Google’s materials — and the how-to guides that track them — give four different answers, so we attribute each rather than pick one:

Does it work offline? The evidence conflicts
This is the murkiest question in the research, and we would rather show the conflict than fake a clean answer:
- Google’s Pixel Buds support doc requires an internet connection and mentions no offline functionality for the buds flows.
- Google Store marketing claims the Tensor chip lets Conversation Mode and Lens translation work offline on Pixel phones — a first-party marketing claim about the phone’s Live Translate suite, not the buds, and it sits awkwardly next to the buds doc’s internet requirement.
- SlashGear’s 2023 how-to said offline translation works with pre-downloaded language packs — a third-party claim we could not confirm against Google’s current buds doc.
- A Gadget Hacks APK teardown reportedly found offline support being built for the Gemini-era Live translate, requiring pre-downloaded packs — unshipped, and Google has confirmed nothing.

What owners actually report
The archived record is remarkably consistent across hardware generations.
The early years (2017–2018). Three archived Reddit comments set the tone. One r/GooglePixel owner took the original buds to Russia in 2018: translation was far from real-time, the mic missed speech, locals were confused by the earbud gesture — and plain speakerphone Google Translate worked better. Two November 2017 commenters reached the same conclusion from different directions: you still hold the phone up anyway, and adding earbuds made Google Translate more awkward, not less. Contemporary press agreed — Malay Mail’s December 2017 coverage described seconds of lag and a Chinese phrase for bubble tea coming out as an explosive drink.
The recent years (2022–2024). A February 2024 owner running Pixel Buds Pro with a Pixel 8 Pro found buds live translate inferior to the standalone Translate app — the split-screen conversation view works better with no buds at all. An August 2023 owner hit an audio-routing bug where both languages played into the buds instead of splitting between bud and phone. What we could not find: any verified owner report of the December 2025 Gemini version. The sentiment above describes the classic flows; treat the new mode’s real-world quality as unproven until owner evidence lands. We also found a support-forum thread title about pairing Pixel Buds Pro 2 with a Motorola Razr+ for translation — evidence that non-Pixel pairings raise real questions — but could not verify the thread’s content or resolution.
The pattern no single source says out loud
Put Google’s requirements doc next to the owner complaints from 2017 through 2024 and one thing becomes obvious: the Pixel Buds never contained the translator. The engine has always been the free Translate app on the phone — which is why the buds’ translation quality never depended on which buds you bought, why owners keep concluding the app alone works better for two-way conversations, and why Google could hand the entire feature to every pair of headphones in December 2025 without the buds losing anything except marketing exclusivity. What you are setting up in this guide is app configuration, not earbud capability — and the honest pitch for Pixel Buds specifically is now hands-free activation plus a private audio channel, nothing more.
Real-usage tips
- Follow Google’s own environment advice. Quiet room, one speaker at a time. Owner reports and a September 2025 blog assessment agree that noise and strong accents degrade recognition into garbled output.
- Expect to wait, but distrust precise numbers. Latency figures circulating online (2–4 seconds per exchange) come from affiliate SEO guides with no methodology shown. The attributable evidence is anecdotal: “far from real-time” in 2018, seconds of lag in 2017 press coverage, and no credible measurement since.
- If both languages play into your buds, you have hit the routing confusion an owner documented in August 2023 — check which device each audio stream is assigned to before blaming the hardware.
- Try the app alone first. More than one owner concluded the split-screen conversation view beats the buds for two-way talk. Skipping the buds mid-conversation costs you nothing.

Which buds should you buy for this? Probably none
If you are choosing earbuds because of translation, reread the pattern section: since December 2025 the feature travels with the Translate app, not the hardware. Pixel Buds Pro 2 remain the flagship pairing — and per announcement coverage, the $129 Pixel Buds 2a (announced August 20, 2025, with the Tensor A1 chip and Gemini support) qualify too. No source in our research shows either model getting translation features that other headphones now lack, beyond the voice-activation shortcut.
